Historical Background of UPSC
The Royal Commission on the higher civil services in India recommended the setting up of the Public Service commission under the chairmanship of Lord Lee which took up the project of submitting the report in 1924. Finally, this step led to the foundation of first civil service on 1st October 1926 under the chairmanship of Sir Ross Barker. The narrow advisory functions to the Public Service commission and the regular strain on this feature by the leaders of our freedom movement lead to the creation of Public Service Commission under the Government of India act 1935. After Independence, the federal Public Service commission became the Union Public Service commission and the dissemination of the constitution of India gave it a constitutional status on January 26, 1950.
